Isopentane is a colorless, flammable liquid. It is extremely flammable, and its vapors and air can form explosive mixtures. In case of open flame and high heat, it is easy to burn and explode. It can react strongly with oxidants and even cause combustion. Its vapors are heavier than air, can spread at a low point to a considerable distance, and will cause back-ignition in case of open flames. In case of high heat, the internal pressure of the container increases, and there is a risk of cracking and explosion.

Tert-amyl alcohol was dehydrated to obtain a mixture of 2-methyl-1-butene, 2-methyl-2-butene and 3-methyl-1-butene, which were hydrotreated to obtain crude isopentane, and then distilled to obtain high-purity isopentane. Natural gas condensate can also be used as raw material to remove C2, C3, C4 and n-pentane fractions by pressure distillation to produce high-purity isopentane.
