Formaldehyde(CAS#50-00-0)
quality
Colorless transparent liquid. It can be arbitrarily miscible with water, ethanol and acetone. It can be gradually oxidized to formic acid in the air, and it is a strong reducing agent. Its vapor forms an explosive mixture with air, which causes combustion and explosion in case of open flame and high heat energy. In general commodities, 10%~12% methanol is added as an inhibitor, otherwise polymerization will occur.
Method
Methanol vapor is prepared by dehydrogenation of methanol by passing copper or silver catalysts at 300 °C. Formaldehyde gas absorbs 36%~40% of water, which is formaldehyde solution. The commercially available formaldehyde solution is distilled to remove impurities, and methanol is supplemented as the reagent formaldehyde solution.
use
It is used as a reagent for the determination of ammonium salts and amino acids, and as a fixative for various preparations in microscopic analysis. It is also used as a sterilization disinfectant, biological specimen impregnation, and reducing agent. It is also an important organic raw material.
security
rat oral LD50: 800mg/kg; rabbit transdermal LD50: 270mg/kg. It is strongly irritating to mucous membranes, upper respiratory tract, eyes and skin. Precautions should be taken against possible exposure to its vapors. Store in a cool, ventilated warehouse. Keep away from fire and heat sources. Protect from direct sunlight. Keep the container tightly sealed. It should be stored separately from oxidants, acids, and alkalis.
