- Isopropanol is reacted with sulfur to obtain 2-methyl-2-propyl-1,3-dithiocyanol, and then 2-methyl-2-propanethiol is obtained by reduction reaction.

- It can also be obtained by the reaction of isopropyl magnesium bromide with hydrogen sulfide.
